Michigan has looked like a different team since halftime against Penn State, recording blowouts of Notre Dame, Maryland, and Michigan State in the wake of that loss.

There’s no denying the Wolverines look like a completely different team. The offense under Josh Gattis has finally found its stride and is averaging over 42 points a game over a current three-game winning streak. Even the defense, traditionally solid, has played better since taking on Penn State.

On Monday evening, the BTN crew addressed the question of who is the second-best team in the B1G after Ohio State? While Michigan is hot right now, Howard Griffith thinks that No. 2 spot still belongs to Penn State:

“No, I don’t think so, I still think it’s Penn State,” said Griffith. “I still think they can be explosive. There’s no doubt about it, what Michigan has done over the past few weeks has really improved this team…I think it’s still a work in progress, but I think they’re probably not No. 2 – maybe No. 3.”

Nicole Auerbach admitted you can make a case for the Wolverines with how they are currently playing. However, the answer to that question will likely come when Michigan takes on Ohio State in the final game of the season:

“I think you can make the case they might be getting there, we’ll know in a couple of weeks…clearly (what Josh Gattis wants to do) is working now,” explained Auerbach.

While Michigan is playing well, it’s also worth noting that the top of the B1G looks very strong across the board. Ohio State, Penn State, Wisconsin, and Minnesota are all having strong seasons and have a shot at the B1G Championship. The Wolverines have lost to two of those teams, but a rematch with Wisconsin and Penn State may look different with how Jim Harbaugh’s squad has looked recently.
