Jim Harbaugh comments on Michigan's 'passing of the torch' to 2024 season
Jim Harbaugh is still relishing in Michigan’s 2023 national championship, the first for the program since 1997. But, even as the Wolverines continue to celebrate, Harbaugh knows things will look much different in 2024.
During a brief Friday interview with Jon Root, Harbaugh said he’s simply gotten back to work for the next season since the celebration. The head coach also dropped a comment about a “passing of the torch” entering 2024.
“It’s been incredible,” said Harbaugh about the national championship. “Just back to work, getting ready for the next season. There’s a passing of the torch — that’s awesome.”

That comment is bound to produce a bit of anxiety among Wolverine fans, particularly as Harbaugh continues to dance with the NFL. He has interviewed for two jobs so far, and more interviews could be in store down the road.
However, in all likelihood, Harbaugh’s comment has nothing to do with his future or a departure to the NFL. With or without Harbaugh leading the program, things in Ann Arbor will look much different next season.
After all, starting quarterback JJ McCarthy is off to the NFL, along with program legend Blake Corum. The overwhelming core of the offensive line is also leaving to go with some key defenders making the jump.
It’s unlikely this is how Harbaugh would let it slip that he is “passing the torch” to offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore (or some other figure) after the national title, and he certainly did not spend time following up on the comment. Looks like fans will have to wait a bit longer to find out Harbaugh’s ultimate decision on his future.
