True freshman Zach Charbonnet has impressed virtually everyone during his short time in Ann Arbor, but Jim Harbaugh knows Michigan needs to be careful with his workload moving forward.

The young running back has already proven to be a crucial member of Michigan’s offense. He recorded 99 yards from scrimmage in the season opener before breaking out against Army. In that game, Charbonnet carried the ball 33 times for 100 yards and three scores.

Since then, Charbonnet has been limited in his touches. He only saw the ball three times in the lopsided loss to Wisconsin before carrying the ball five times against Rutgers.

Both of those games turned into blowouts, and that likely had something to do with Charbonnet’s usage. Harbaugh also discussed his workload on Monday, indicating that the coaching staff is actively gauging and trying to limit his workload.

Josh Henschke with Hawkeye Insider shared the transcript of Harbaugh’s comments:

“We’re limiting his carries,” said Harbaugh. “How many carries, not really, but how many plays he’s actually in there. You don’t always know whether it’s going to be a run or a throw, depending on the play. Like the fact that you could split it up, maybe 20-20-20 and maybe a few for a fourth guy. Zach, played really well. Christian Turner played really well in this game and had some fine runs. Hassan Haskins, really played well. We’ve been watching Hassan making strides in practice and to see him play that way in the game. Redshirt freshman, Hassan Haskins, has really come on. We’re excited about the way he played. As I said, the other backs played real good, too.”

It will be interesting to see if Charbonnet is limited much against Iowa. If the game is close, it would not be surprising to see him used a good bit against a tough Hawkeyes defense.
