Jim Harbaugh predicts Michigan players to break record in 2024 NFL Draft
Jim Harbaugh has expectations at an all-time high in Ann Arbor after back-to-back B1G titles and trips to the College Football Playoff. He also believes Michigan’s roster is at an all-time high in terms of talent.
According to Bruce Feldman with “The Athletic,” Harbaugh predicted the Wolverines can shatter the all-time record for the number of picks in a single NFL Draft. Georgia currently holds the record with 15 players selected in one draft.
Harbaugh believes the Wolverines could have 20 players taken in the 2024 NFL Draft:
“I think we’ll have 20 guys picked (in the next NFL draft),” Harbaugh told The Athletic. “I bet we break that (draft) record. (Georgia) had 15 that year.”
Harbaugh’s claim seems bold, but it’s not hard to see the talent in Ann Arbor. Jim Nagy — Executive Director of the Senior Bowl — has already hinted at the possibility of 7 offensive linemen alone getting an NFL shot following the 2023 season.
Expanding the look at Michigan’s offense, it is likely a pair of running backs are selected with Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards both eligible for the draft. QB JJ McCarthy would also be eligible.
A group of talented wide receivers and a deep and talented defense could also produce a haul of picks. DL Kris Jenkings, LBs Junior Colson and Mike Barrett, and DB Mike Sainristil are some of the key names to watch.
Can the Wolverines match Georgia’s record?
At the end of the day, it is hard to determine if Michigan truly could match — and beat — Georgia’s record by 5 picks. Talent in college is one thing, but that does not always turn into an NFL Draft pick. There are also players from Michigan’s roster that will be eligible for the 2024 Draft that could still return to college.
Then again, with his time spent in the NFL and at the college level, Harbaugh might have a better feel for how NFL teams are evaluating the players on Michigan’s roster. Or, he could simply be pumping up his team’s chances entering 2023.
Smoke from Harbaugh or a fair assessment? We’ll find out down the road.
