Jim Harbaugh took the podium during fall camp Wednesday to address some questions. Including, is there a quarterback battle at Michigan?

Yes…if you read into the words of the head coach.

The veteran Cade McNamara completed 210 of his 327 pass attempts (64.2%) for 2.576 yards and 15 touchdowns to 6 interceptions in 2021. The Nevada native also helped Michigan to a 12-2 season and a B1G Championship.

JJ McCarthy might be the quarterback in waiting. The 5-star QB brings a lot of hype as the jewel of Michigan’s 2021 recruiting class. McCarthy went 34-for-59 passing for 516 yards and 5 touchdowns last season.

This race might not be decided anytime soon. The Wolverines have a fairly light schedule in September. Either QB can probably get by home dates against Colorado State, Hawaii and Connecticut. Even Michigan’s home game against Maryland is favorable.

The Wolverines’ first road game is against Iowa on Oct. 1. Who’s under center in that game could foreshadow who Harbaugh will go with for the rest of the season.

Regardless, this is an interesting conundrum for a team ranked No. 8 in the Preseason AP Poll.
