Jim Harbaugh suspended 3 games: Michigan releases statement announcing suspension
Jim Harbaugh will be suspended for Michigan’s first 3 games of the 2023 football season, the program announced Monday.
U-M’s announcement confirms earlier reports that Harbaugh’s 3-game suspension is part of self-imposed sanctions in the program’s NCAA case.
“While the ongoing NCAA matter continues through the NCAA process, today’s announcement is our way of addressing mistakes that our department has agreed to in an attempt to further that process,” athletic director Warde Manuel said in a program release. “We will continue to support Coach Harbaugh, his staff, and our outstanding student-athletes. Per the NCAA’s guidelines, we cannot comment further until the matter is resolved.”
The news of the 3-game suspension comes after it was widely reported that there was an agreement with the NCAA for a 4-game suspension in 2023. Earlier this month, however, it was revealed that the 4-game suspension had been waved off as the case moved through the NCAA disciplinary system.
Michigan’s Monday announcement states that interim coaching appointments will be made at a future date. The Wolverines open the 2023 season against East Carolina on Sept. 2. Harbaugh will also miss Michigan’s home games against UNLV (Sept. 9) and Bowling Green (Sept. 16).
Harbaugh is set to return for Michigan’s B1G opener against Rutgers on Sept. 23 in Ann Arbor.
