Jim Harbaugh to join elite Rose Bowl fraternity as player and coach
Jim Harbaugh will join a shortlist of elite Rose Bowl contributors when he leads Michigan into this year’s game against Alabama.
On New Year’s Day, the Wolverines will face Alabama in the College Football Playoff Semifinal in Pasadena. It will be Michigan’s third straight trip to the CFP, but it is the first time the Wolverines will play in the Rose Bowl in that span.
On Wednesday, the Rose Bowl itself confirmed Harbaugh will join an impressive shortlist of individuals to play and serve as the head coach of a team in the Rose Bowl. Harbaugh will be the 12th individual all-time with that distinct honor.
As a player, Harbaugh led Michigan into the 1987 Rose Bowl following the 1986 season. The Wolverines lost to Arizona State in that game.

According to the Rose Bowl, Harbaugh will be the second person at Michigan to record the honor. Bump Elliott is also credited with playing for and coaching the Wolverines in a Rose Bowl. Pete Elliott is credited with playing in a Rose Bowl for Michigan but finished the feat as a head coach for Cal and again at Illinois.
