Jim McElwain exactly unsure of how he landed at Michigan

Jim McElwain is certainly excited to learn under Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh, but he’s not exactly sure how his hiring came out.

McElwain, the former Florida coach, was unemployed when Michigan and Harbaugh reached out about a potential on-field coaching role with the wide receivers.

“I don’t know if he got the wrong number and I answered,” McElwain said, via ESPN. “No, I don’t really know how it came about, but we got a phone call and I was obviously very excited to come and, if nothing else, get an opportunity to stand in the background and see how something is operated.”

If Michigan fans are unfamiliar with how McElwain operates, this is par for the course. He’s very happy-go-lucky with his words and actions.

Having previously worked under Nick Saban at Alabama, McElwain now gets to see how Harbaugh handles his business in the Big Ten, and he plans to learn a thing or two from his new boss.

“There are a lot of things I’ll take with me if ever given the opportunity again, that we’ve learned from him (Harbaugh),” McElwain said. “I think probably his approach with the team itself, how he interacts with that, how he handles some of the outside things that go on. He does a great job with that. His preparation with that is really good.”

The Wolverines beat his Gators in 2017 33-17 in the season opener.
