JJ McCarthy, Michigan already looking forward to MSU game: 'We want Paul back'
JJ McCarthy has yet to experience hoisting Paul Bunyan after a win over Michigan State. This season, he’s ready to change that.
Michigan finished Week 7 with a dominating 41-17 over Penn State and the only thing McCarthy and running back Donovan Edwards are thinking about is defeating Michigan State. In the press conference, both McCarthy and Edwards discussed the need to take back the Paul Bunyan Trophy from the Spartans.
“We want Paul back,” said McCarthy. “They’re coming to our house. I don’t know if it’s gonna be under the lights but it might be… We’re gonna be turning the page real quick.”

Last year, No. 8 Michigan State defeated No. 6 Michigan 37-33 in East Lansing thanks to an incredible performance by running back Kenneth Walker III. Walker rushed for 197 yards and 5 touchdowns on 23 carries.
Michigan accumulated 552 total yards against the Spartans. Unfortunately, the Wolverine defense could not slow down Walker in the comeback attempt.
Michigan looks to win its first game over Michigan State since 2019. That game turned into a 44-10 win for the Wolverines in Ann Arbor.
Michigan holds a commanding series lead over Michigan State 71-38-5. The Wolverines and the Spartans will not meet until Week 9.
