JJ McCarthy had to have a second surgery, it was recently revealed.

The former Michigan quarterback had his rookie season end before Week 1 of 2024. McCarthy had surgery for a torn meniscus on Aug. 14.

The August operation was called successful by the Vikings, but ESPN’s Kevin Seifert shared Wednesday that McCarthy had to have more work done. McCarthy had a second surgery to address the swelling in his knee and also received an injection.

The good news is that McCarthy’s recovery timeline is not impacted by the second procedure.

McCarthy started all 15 games of Michigan’s 2023 national championship campaign. Leading the Wolverines to a perfect season, McCarthy posted career-highs in passing attempts (332), completions (240), completion percentage (72.3) and yards (2,991). McCarthy also tied his career-high of 22 passing TDs from 2022.

McCarthy earned first-team All-Big Ten recognition and the B1G Quarterback of the Year award for his stellar 2023 season. It was in the leadup to the 2024 NFL Draft, however, that his stock surged as he worked out for teams and interviewed. Minnesota took McCarthy with the No. 10 overall pick in the 2024 draft.
