Joel Klatt projects staff changes at Michigan following Jim Harbaugh's departure
Joel Klatt understands that there will be plenty of discussion about staff moves between Jim Harbaugh’s new staff with the Los Angeles Chargers, and Michigan’s staff holdovers for the 2024 season.
The FOX Sports analyst said he’d be shocked if Jesse Minter, the defensive coordinator, doesn’t follow Harbaugh to the Chargers to work in the same role. Klatt referred to the success of Mike Macdonald, a former Michigan assistant, with the Baltimore Ravens.
The other move is Jay Harbaugh to the Chargers, but after that it gets complicated. However, Klatt said he believes the majority of the staff would remain at Michigan.
But Klatt believes that Michigan’s strength and conditioning coach Ben Herbert should be a top priority for the Wolverines to retain under expected coach Sherrone Moore, in fact, Klatt said Moore should “fight for Herbert.”
Klatt said the Michigan coaches and players will point to Herbert for Michigan being mentally tough. And his impact in the NFL is mitigated by the fact that he’s coaching pros, Klatt said.
“In my estimation, Ben Herbert fits better at Michigan in college. I think he’s going to stay there and that would be a huge win for Sherrone Moore moving forward because that would be a great way to really keep the culture of the locker room intact during the transition,” Klatt said on Thursday’s episode of The Joel Klatt Show.
