Zavier Simpson will miss the first game of his Michigan career this week.

On Monday, head coach Juwan Howard announced that the senior guard has been suspended for Michigan’s game on Tuesday against Nebraska for a violation of team policies. It’s the first time in four seasons that Simpson will miss a game.

“While we are disappointed with what has transpired with Zavier, we know there are always lessons to learn and grow from,” Howard said in a release. “We take these matters and consequences very seriously. Moving forward, we will continue to handle this matter appropriately within our program and basketball family.”

This season, Simpson is averaging 12.8 points and 8.3 assists per game. He’s also posting 4.3 rebounds per game and is averaging more than 33 minutes per contest.

It’s unclear how long Simpson’s suspension will last.

Michigan has hit some hard times recently on the court, losing five of its last six games, including four straight. It’s been a hard fall for the Wolverines, which were once ranked as the No. 4 team in the nation after wins over Iowa State, North Carolina and Gonzaga to claim the Battle 4 Atlantis title.

Simpson has appeared in 135 career games with Michigan, making 85 starts.

Tuesday’s road game against Nebraska will be the sixth true away game for the Wolverines this year. They are currently 0-5 on the road.
