Kirk Herbstreit is asking a lot of questions about Michigan after Jim Harbaugh’s interview with the Minnesota Vikings and Josh Gattis’ exit from the staff.

Herbstreit appeared Monday on “The Pat McAfee Show.”

“How does this get out?” Herbstreit said after acknowledging there had long been rumors of Harbaugh returning to the NFL. “How in the world does he go as far as he went with the Vikings? I don’t know if he turned it down? They turned it down? Whatever happened, and now you’ve got to go back into that meeting room where they say ‘Who’s got it better than us? Nobody'”

Herbstreit shifted to talking about Michigan’s momentum as a program. He noted that regular-season finale win over Ohio State and the Big Ten Championship Game victory against Iowa.

“I mean, for all that momentum that they created there, it seems like they’re almost having to start all over again,” Herbstreit opined.

Herbstreit clarified he wasn’t criticizing Harbaugh for considering the Vikings job.

“I don’t fault him for looking at potentially going to another job,” Herbstreit said. “In fact, I guess the way it was handled, clearly, did not work out that good. And then on the way out the door, the Frank Broyles Award winner takes some shots with the text that he sent out to some of the players about basically ‘Hey, here ‘s a quick life lesson for you, if you feel like you’re not wanted or respected at your current job, need to move on.’”

Gattis won the Broyles Award for the nation’s top assistant as Michigan’s offensive coordinator this season. He reportedly texted his players upon his departure for Miami.

“Unfortunately the past few weeks has told a different story to me about the very little appreciation I have here from administration,” Gattis reportedly said. “In life I would never advise anyone to be where they are not wanted.”
