There seems to be two schools of thought when it comes to Jim Harbaugh.

His doubters say that he hasn’t won a division title and two third-place divisional finishes shouldn’t make him Michigan’s savior. His supporters point to the 5-7 team he inherited that just produced back-to-back 10-win seasons.

Count Fox Sports analyst Joel Klatt in the latter group.

Klatt, who was a guest on “The Herd” with Colin Cowherd on Thursday, talked about the upcoming college football season. As it often does, the discussion shifted to the Michigan head coach.

There was some serious praise from Klatt.

“There’s no coaching staff in America that teaches the game — in particular on the field — like Jim Harbaugh does,” Klatt said on ‘The Herd.’ “He will get more out of a team than anybody else in America.”

There’s certainly a case to be made for that.

Klatt referenced how Harbaugh’s best developmental project at Michigan so far was Jake Rudock, who couldn’t win the starting job at Iowa but he transferred to Michigan and had an impressive senior season. That led to Rudock getting drafted by the Detroit Lions.

Michigan just had a program record amount of NFL draft picks, most of which were part of that 5-7 team under Brady Hoke two years ago. As a result, Michigan is now one of the most inexperienced teams in the country.

Will the lack of returning starters — Michigan has one returning starter on defense — hold the Wolverines back in 2017?

“…I never pay attention to that with Jim Harbaugh because he’s the best developmental coach in America. No questions asked,” Klatt said.

Michigan will likely start the season ranked among the top 15 teams in the country. They’re coming off their second top-12 finish of the brief Harbaugh era.

That’s the new floor for Michigan, according to Klatt.

“Michigan is a top-10 program perennially with Jim Harbaugh as the head coach,” he said.
