Mazi Smith, a Michigan team captain, addressed the arrest in Ann Arbor after being pulled over with a firearm and ammunition in October. Smith mentions that he was a few days away from obtaining a concealed pistol license making it legal to carry a firearm on your persons in the state of Michigan.

Since then, Smith entered a plea deal to change the original felony charge to a misdemeanor firearm possession charge.

“I had my certificate and I meant to turn it in a couple days before I got pulled over,” Smith said concerning the status of his license per MLive.com. “I had to reschedule for the Wednesday the week after. So, I was like four days away from turning in my certificate.”

Smith was asked about his relationship and his appreciation of coach Jim Harbaugh moving forward after the incident. Harbaugh decided not to suspend Smith considering the context of the charge.

“Coach Harbaugh still trusted me, to be a leader on this team and captain,” Smith said about his relationship with Michigan’s head coach. “I much appreciate it, because he didn’t have to.”
