For the second time in two days, Michigan has picked up a commitment from a Massachusetts prospect.

On Friday, three-star inside linebacker Casey Phinney announced his verbal commitment to Michigan, becoming this seventh member of Jim Harbaugh’s 2021 recruiting class. He’s the second player from Massachusetts to pledge to the Wolverines this week.

Thursday, UM landed a commitment from four-star tight end Louis Hansen, one of the top 10 players at his position in this class. Hansen is a native of Needham, while Phinney comes from Marshfield.

“Thank you to Coach Brown and Coach Harbaugh for giving me this opportunity and recruiting me for the past few years,” Phinney wrote in a message on Twitter. “With that being said I am excited to announce my commitment to the University of Michigan!!”

Per 247Sports, Phinney ranks as the No. 40 inside linebacker in the 2021 class and is listed as one of the top 10 players from Massachusetts. The 6-foot-1, 225-pound backer received six additional offers during the recruiting cycle.

With Phinney’s commitment, Michigan now owns the B1G’s sixth-ranked recruiting class and sits 13th nationally. He’s the fifth player to commit to UM in the last two weeks.
