The title of best athletic department in college sports belongs to the University of Michigan.
CBS Sports recently presented its Best in College Sports award to Michigan for the 2018-19 academic year. The Wolverines experienced incredible success across the board, highlighted by a 10-3 season on the football field, a Sweet Sixteen appearance by the men’s basketball team, a second-round NCAA Tournament run by the women’s basketball team and a College World Series runner-up finish for the baseball team.
From CBS Sports:
The weighted formula puts 2.5 times as much emphasis on football and 2.0 times the emphasis on men’s basketball compared to women’s basketball and the “wild cards.” Teams that did not finish in the final AP Top 25 in football but played in a bowl were awarded 62.5 points (25 x 2.5). Teams that made the men’s NIT were given 20 points (10 x 2), while WNIT teams received 10 points. For all titles settled via bracket, point totals were based upon how many teams participated. All champions in the other sports received 100 points for a national title.
Michigan is the second B1G athletic program to win the award from CBS Sports. Ohio State claimed the title in 2013-14 and 2017-18.
Other B1G teams that finished with high marks were Ohio State (5th), Iowa (7th), Michigan State (11th), Maryland (20th) and Penn State (25th).
