Michigan began its 2024-25 season with a bang on Monday night, blowing out Cleveland State by 48 points to usher in the Dusty May era in the best way possible.

May won at FAU in ways nobody thought possible, leading the Owls to the Final Four in 2023. Now in Ann Arbor, May is already winning on the court and off the court. Saturday brought a huge victory in the latter category, as the Wolverines got a commitment from 5-star guard Trey McKenney to heavily boost their 2025 class.

McKenney decided to stay home, choosing Michigan over Georgetown and USC. The senior star at Orchard Lake (Michigan) St. Mary’s is the top-ranked recruit in the state of Michigan and is ranked 20th overall in the 2025 class, according to 247Sports. The 6-foot-4, 225-pound McKenney is also the 3rd-ranked combo guard in the class.

McKenney at one time had in-state rival Michigan State on his list of choices, but he chose Ann Arbor, giving May a huge recruiting victory as he tries to launch Michigan to the same heights that he got FAU to in recent seasons. McKenney was always a top priority for Michigan and adds star power to May’s first full class.

He is the 3rd commit to the Wolverines’ 2025 class. The others are Winters Grady, a 4-star forward from Napa, Calif., and small forward Oscar Goodman, via the NBA’s Global Academy in Australia.
