Warde Manuel will be the athletic director at the University of Michigan for at least five more years.

On Thursday, Michigan announced that the school’s Board of Trustees approved president Mark Schlissel’s recommendation to reappoint Manuel as the university’s athletic director. Manuel has been serving as the athletic director for five years and his contract was set to expire in March.

Manuel’s contract will be extended through June 30, 2026. He started his tenure at Michigan in 2016 after serving in the same role at the University of Connecticut.

“I am pleased to recommend the reappointment of Warde Manuel as the Donald R. Shepherd Director of Intercollegiate Athletics,” Schlissel said. “With the support of Mr. Manuel’s leadership as the athletic director, Michigan Athletics has excelled in the classroom and on the fields of play.”

The base salary for Manuel will be set at $1.1 million.

Manuel is responsible for hiring Juwan Howard as the men’s basketball coach following the 2018-19 season when John Bielein left for the NBA. Manuel also recently signed Jim Harbaugh to a four-year contract extension.
