Michigan football: 5 predictions for Wolverines vs. Maryland Terrapins
Michigan has another weekend to prepare for its annual season finale vs. Ohio State.
Coach Jim Harbaugh would never describe any game as a “tune-up” or anything similar, but he’s probably stressing the importance of this Saturday vs. Maryland.
One game at a time, you know? They all say it.
At 9-1, Michigan has the chance to lock up a 10-win season and further solidify its rank in the Big Ten before playing the game that will decide its College Football Playoff fate.
Maryland has been a punching bag since joining the Big Ten, and this season hasn’t been kind. Coming off a 40-21 loss to Michigan State, the Terps would probably love nothing more than to derail Michigan’s postseason goals. It’s these type of games — late in the season against a team with nothing to lose and everything to gain — that tend to be dangerous for teams in Michigan’s position.
But again, it’s Maryland … so it’s safe to say that the Wolverines will be 10-1 when they host Ohio State in 2 weeks.
With that said, let’s get into prediction mode. As always, predictions are based upon supporting data, trends and probability.
All gets 5 catches
It proved to be the game-winning touchdown against Penn State and it was Erick All’s first at Michigan. The 47-yard score impressed Jim Harbaugh so much, that he bowed out of his own postgame interview and asked that ABC interview All after the Wolverines’ 21-17 win Saturday in State College, Pa. During the past his past 2 games (DNP vs. Indiana), he’s had 14 catches — and 10 of those were against Michigan State.
All has become a larger part of the offense and should see plenty of targets Saturday vs. Maryland, warranting a prediction of at least 5 receptions vs. the Terps, who were just ripped apart by Spartans QB Payton Thorne for 287 yards and 4 touchdowns.
That leads into the next one …
McNamara 3 TDs, 250 yards
Cade McNamara is in position to do some damage to the Terps. So far, his 3 touchdown passes vs. Penn State are his season- and career-highs — but he could easily tie it or set a new mark against a Maryland defense that ranks 13th in the B1G No. 13. Maryland routinely gives up 250 yards through the air. McNamara has topped 250 twice this year, and he’s fresh off a 217-yard day vs. the Nittany Lions.
McNamara tossing a trio of TD passes and eclipsing 250 passing yards is definitely within reason.
Haskins goes off
Hassan Haskins has been Michigan’s offensive MVP. Now leading the way by himself with Blake Corum out, Haskins will also have an opportunity to have a banner day vs. Maryland. In each of the past 5 games, Haskins has gained more than 100 yards — and he’s topped 150 during the past 2, setting a career-high with 168 yards vs. Indiana.
Getting 150 and scoring at least a pair of touchdowns seems very much doable for Haskins, who should also hit the 1,000-yard mark on the year (he’s at 985 right now).
Moody gets a kick (out of outscoring Maryland)
Kicker Jake Moody has been one of Michigan’s most consistent players. Given the situation, it wouldn’t be out-of-bounds to predict a major blowout in favor of the Wolverines (score prediction below). With extra-points and field goals, Moody — who averages 9.9 points per game — could outdo the Terps by himself.
Maryland scored 21 against Michigan State and averages 26.9 points per game, but MSU’s defense isn’t at the level of Michigan’s defense. It’d be a shock to see the Terps get into the end zone more than once Saturday.
Score
Michigan might not set a season-high, but it could get close Saturday. Earlier this year, the Wolverines beat Northern Illinois 63-10, so they have the ability to score a lot of points. UM averages 34.7 points per game but could easily tack on 20 to that vs. Maryland.
