Michigan is already implementing a plan to refund football season-ticket holders if the 2020 season is canceled.

The University of Michigan Athletic Department sent out a message to ticket holders after receiving an influx of questions as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to keep sports on the back burner. The Wolverines’ first home football game is scheduled on Sept. 12 when they’ll host Ball State.

“We don’t have answers,” the letter states. “Speculation about the global environment 4-6 months from now is premature, and we will continue to follow the advice and directives of medical experts and health officials. We are committed to doing whatever is necessary to protect the health of our student-athletes, season ticket holders, and fans.”

Right now, Michigan stated it’s too early to predict what will happen with the 2020 football season, as well as other sports the university offers. However, the school said it will adjust its refund policies if there are any cancellations, allowing fans the following options:

  • Transfer of payments for the 2021-22 seasons
  • Changing the allocation of payments to a tax-deductible athletic donation
  • Receiving a full refund

With so much up in the air currently, Michigan will likely not be the first and only school to release this kind of plan.
