Michigan on Saturday added a veteran presence to its defensive line as former Clemson defensive tackle Tre Williams committed to the Wolverines.

Williams was considered a top 100 recruit when he signed with Clemson in 2020, also rating within the top 12 of all defensive tackles on 247Sports’ Composite rankings.

After playing in a pair of games in 2020, Williams made 11 appearances for the Tigers in 2021, making 10 tackles and 4 tackles for a loss. In 2022, he posted 6 tackles in 12 games before a shoulder injury in 2023 held him out for all but 5 games — leading to a medical redshirt. He returned in 2024, making 14 tackles and 2.0 sacks.

Williams’ collegiate career hasn’t gone exactly as planned, considering the hype he received coming out of high school. He graduated from Clemson in August, and with a sixth year of eligibility available to him, he’ll look to finish things on a high note in the Big Ten.

Michigan, meanwhile, is looking to regain championship form. After starting the 2024 season 4-1, it lost 4 of its next 5 to move to 5-5 but ended the regular season with wins over Northwestern and archrival Ohio State.

The Wolverines earned a spot in the ReliaQuest Bowl, defeating Alabama 19-13 to end the year at 8-5 and on a 3-game win streak.
