Michigan landed a major piece of its 2024-25 roster on Sunday morning.

The Wolverines picked up a commitment from former Auburn point guard Tre Donaldson. A former 4-star recruit, Donaldson was a key part of the Tigers’ guard rotation over the past 2 seasons.

Donaldson started 10 games for Auburn last season and 6.7 points and 3.2 assists per night. He led the team with a 28.4% assist rate, which also put him near the top-100 nationally as well. For context, only Dug McDaniel (27.6%) had an assist rate above 18% amongst Michigan players in 2023-24.

With McDaniel transferring to Kansas State, Donaldson arrives as a capable point guard to run Dusty May’s offense in his first season at the helm. Donaldson is also a great shooter — he made 41.2% of his 3-point attempts last season.

Donaldson is the 3rd transfer to commit to May and the Wolverines so far this offseason. He joins former Yale center Danny Wolf and former North Texas guard Rubin Jones in Michigan’s transfer class. Overall, the group sits at No. 7 in the 247Sports Composite’s national rankings so far this cycle.

What this means for next season

It’s clear that May and his staff are targeting elite shooters this offseason. Donaldson and Jones both shot above 40% from 3-point range last year and Wolf (34.5%) is also a very strong shooter for his position. The Wolverines will almost certainly space the floor more than they did a year ago.

Last season, Michigan shot 35.9% from 3 but ranked 158th nationally in 3-point attempt rate. When Florida Atlantic was at its best under May in 2022-23, the Owls ranked 35th nationally in 3-point attempt rate.

Michigan is hoping to have a much better season in 2024-25 after missing the NCAA Tournament altogether this past March. According to bet365, the Wolverines are currently +6000 to win the national championship next season.
