A group of Michigan lawmakers have something to say to B1G commissioner Tony Petitti.
In a letter shared on Wednesday, a bipartisan group of 11 Michigan legislators sent a letter to Petitti urging him to avoid any early punishment against the University of Michigan or the Wolverine coaching staff.
“It’s absolutely vital that members of the Big Ten Conference receive due process in any investigation, especially those that may have been initiated by allegations from parties with clear conflicts of interest,” Rep. Phil Skaggs said. “We must not punish the dedicated players, coaches and staff of the University of Michigan football program based on incomplete evidence.”
“We know that college football is a topic charged with emotions on all sides. What’s important here is to let the facts determine the outcome of this investigation,” said Rep. Graham Filler, co-founder of the Big Ten athletics blog “Off-Tackle Empire.”
Snippets from the letter include mentions that allegations “should be taken seriously” but must be met “with thoughtful and thorough investigations based on fairness for all of those involved.” The legislators also informed Petitti any “ill-considered actions” or rush to judgment would lead the group to “vigorously support” Michigan’s public universities in a search for fairness and due process.
