Michigan OL coach Ed Warinner talks about relationship with Mark Dantonio
There isn’t much love between the Michigan and Michigan State. There’s a mutual distaste among the in-state rivals, among the players, students and fans.
But there will be at least one friendship that is briefly rekindled on Saturday afternoon.
Michigan offensive line coach Ed Warinner and Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio were roommates while serving on Jim Dennison’s staff at Akron. Warinner was a graduate assistant and Dantonio was the defensive backs coach.
Just a few days ahead of the in-state clash, Warinner talked about his relationship with Dantonio.
“That was a long time ago,” Warinner said. “We were just two guys who loved coaching football. We were learning, we were working together. So we enjoyed that time together and we hit it off and have a great relationship and that’s carried through.”
Warinner did say that things might be a little different now that the two coaches are at rival schools, but says he respects what Dantonio has done with the Spartans.
“He’s a good man,” Warinner said. “You respect him. You respect what he’s done. A great family guy, he’s got a great family.”
