Michigan baseball had a chance to win the Louisville Regional on Sunday evening. Now, the Wolverines will face a do-or-die game Monday night with a shot to advance to the Super Regionals while a loss would send them home.
Erik Bakich’s squad entered Sunday having already taken down Louisville once with a 7-3 on Saturday. Unfortunately, Michigan was down 7-0 by the time the third inning rolled around.
Angelo Smith had the start on the mound for the Wolverines, but he was only able to record one out. He eventually gave way to Avery Goldensoph with Smith credited for 3 runs on 2 walks. Goldensoph did not fare much better while recording 2 outs and getting tagged with 3 earned runs.
When it was all said and done, the Wolverines used 7 pitchers to get through the game with 6 pitchers credited with 2+ earned runs. Louisville finished the game with 20 runs and a dominant win.
Michigan did not fare much better at the plate. Louisville starter Riley Phillips shined over 5 innings with 11 strikeouts and a lone earned run allowed on 2 hits. The one bright spot for the Wolverines came with a solo home run by Joey Velazquez.
Now, Michigan and Louisville will face off in a winner-take-all game Monday evening with a shot to advance to the Super Regionals. First pitch is set for 6 pm ET.
Louisville forces another game with Michigan. The teams meet again Monday evening at 6 p.m. following the Cardinal’s 20-1 win today.
