The Michigan Wolverines have had a quarterback problem in 2024. One potential future solution at the position is no longer an option, however, after Carter Smith announced his de-commitment from the team on Wednesday.

Per the 247Sports Composite ranking, Smith is a 4-star prospect in the 2025 class. The QB initially committed to the Wolverines last November.

“I would like to start by thanking the coaching staff at Michigan for everything they have done for me,” Smith wrote in a note shared on social media. “I would especially like to thank Coach Campbell for everything and for giving me such an incredible opportunity. With that being said, I would like to announce that I have decommitted from the University of Michigan.”

Smith went on an unofficial visit to Ann Arbor just last weekend. Reports indicate that Wisconsin has already reached out to Smith, while Clemson, Georgia Tech, Louisville, and Kentucky are rumored to have interest as well.

The young prospect stars for Bishop Verot High School in Fort Myers, FL. Smith is rated as the No. 14 QB in the 2025 class and the No. 26 prospect out of Florida per the 247Sports composite ranking.

In 2023, Smith earned Gatorade Florida Player of the Year honors after throwing for 2,223 yards with 29 TDs and 4 INTs. Smith showed dual-threat ability as well, rushing for 715 yards and 19 TDs on the ground.

It’s worth noting that Smith’s de-commitment comes as the Wolverines are rumored to be making a push for current LSU commit and No. 1 prospect Bryce Underwood. The Wolverines have reportedly made a “competitive NIL offer” for the prized prospect, which could have scared Smith away.

The Wolverines currently have the No. 14 class in the country for 2025.
