Michigan sportswriter highlights dangers of first career road start for JJ McCarthy at Kinnick Stadium
Michigan will be heading into Kinnick Stadium in its first road game of the season on Saturday to take on Iowa. Angelique Chengelis joined the Iowa podcast ‘Hawk Off the Press’ to talk about J.J. McCarthy first career road start.
Kinnick Stadium will not be an easy place to do that at either. Chengelis will be interested in seeing how the young Michigan QB adjusts to Kinnick Stadium’s atmosphere.
“Definitely a little bit of a different wrinkle with JJ. A sophomore who made his first career start in game 2, and now this is his first road start. I’m curious to see how he adjust to that. I’ve talked to Michigan players from way back and they’ve all said that Kinnick is maybe the hardest place to play. Penn State with the whiteout, Ohio Stadium of course. With Kinnick, they feel they’re lucky if they get out of there with a win.”
While Michigan managed to get a win in its B1G home opener against Maryland, Chengelis noted that McCarthy didn’t have a perfect game. McCarthy threw an interception that was out of bounds, and fumbled twice even though the team recovered both.
“J.J. had some issues last week,” said Chengelis. “He fumbled twice. He had a pick that the defender caught out of bounds. I think that’s what they’re working on to tighten for this game against this defense.”
Can McCarthy overcome the mistakes he made last week?
