Michigan struggles vs. Maryland, cedes at least a share of Big Ten title to Michigan State
Michigan continued its slide into the postseason on Wednesday, falling at home for the third time in 4 games to Maryland.
With a 71-65 loss, the Wolverines (22-8, 14-5 Big Ten) handed at least a share of the regular-season Big Ten title to rival Michigan State. The Spartans hold a 1.5-game lead with 2 games left to play. They’ll visit Iowa on Thursday before hosting Michigan on Sunday. The Wolverines need MSU to lose the Iowa game to split the regular-season title.
When the 2 sides met at the Crisler Center on Feb. 21, Michigan State walked away with a 75-62 victory to wrestle sole possession of first place away from Michigan. That was Michigan’s first home loss of the season. Wednesday night’s defeat marked a second consecutive home loss, following up a 93-73 rout by Illinois last Sunday.
And Maryland tried hard to give the game away.
The Terrapins missed each of their final 5 shots and 6 of their final 7. They did not make a field goal over the final 6:02 of the game. Yet the Wolverines lost by multiple possessions.
Maryland hit 10 free throws over the final 6 minutes. Michigan got triples to fall from Nimari Burnett and Tre Donaldson, to threaten the Terps, but it never got the game within 4 points.
U-M got 20 points from Danny Wolf and 20 more from Vladislav Golden. The pair combined to shoot 17-for-30 from the field. Their teammates managed 25 combined points on 10-for-32 shooting.
Michigan opened the game ice-cold from the field, connecting on 2 of its 9 triples and only 10 of its 32 shot attempts in the first half. That was with Wolf going 5-for-6 in the opening 20 minutes. He scored half of the Wolverines’ 22 first-half points.
The offense caught fire in the second half, but 9 turnovers proved damaging.
Tipoff against the Spartans on Sunday is set for noon ET on CBS.
