Michigan announced its presence as a national contender on Tuesday night in Ann Arbor, as the 20th-ranked Wolverines knocked off No. 7 Purdue, 75-73, to win their 5th straight game and 6th in their past 7.

A last-second heave by Purdue star Braden Smith was unsuccessful, setting of a wild celebration at Crisler Arena as Michigan improved to 19-5 overall and 11-2 in the Big Ten. Meanwhile, Purdue fell to 19-6 overall and 11-3 in the league after seeing its winning streak end at 4 games.

Michigan earned the first top-10 victory of the Dusty May era, which just began last fall and looks to be off and running in the right direction. The Wolverines won with extreme balanced scoring on Tuesday night, with Danny Wolf leading the way with 15 points and 9 rebounds. Roddy Gayle Jr. gave May’s team a huge lift off the bench with 14 points and 7 rebounds.

Smith played his usual brilliant game for the Boilermakers, putting up 24 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists while playing all 40 minutes, but that last-second desperation shot was way off the mark.

Michigan will try to keep its momentum going on Sunday afternoon at Ohio State, while Purdue will try to bounce back at home against No. 16 Wisconsin on Saturday.
