One Michigan WR and a key performer for the special teams unit is in the transfer portal.

On Monday, AJ Henning — a former 4-star prospect via the 2020 recruiting class — announced he was going to be entering the portal.

“I would like to thank GOD for the blessings and opportunities bestowed upon me at the University of Michigan,” Henning wrote in his announcement. “I appreciate Coach Harbaugh and his staff for the opportunity to play for this University.

“To my teammates, who are now my brothers — thank you for lifelong memories forged here. My sincerest gratitude to the fans for the endless support during my playing time at the University of Michigan. Being a Michigan Man has taught me things far beyond the football field and I will carry that with me for life. With that being said, I will be entering my name into the transfer portal.”

AJ Henning’s production in Ann Arbor

Henning has been Michigan’s main return man the past two seasons, logging a total of 57 punt returns and 8.3 yards per return since the start of the 2021 season. He had a punt return touchdown against UConn in the 2022 season and a kick return touchdown against Maryland in 2021.

Unfortunately, Henning has been unable to crack the offensive depth chart, registering just 40 total touches in 3 seasons with the Wolverines. He had a career-high 10 catches and 162 yards rushing during the 2021 season.

It would appear Henning’s move is related to playing time with the offense, but that is not clear at this point. We’ll see where he winds up and if Henning is able to carve out a bigger role at his next destination. He should have no shortage of Power 5 interest in the portal.
