Mike Hart sets Michigan history during head coaching debut
Mike Hart is getting his first taste of being a head coach during Michigan’s Week 2 game against UNLV. Along the way, Hart has earned a bit of distinction among Michigan’s football program.
Along with Jay Harbaugh, Hart is splitting the interim head coaching duties for the Wolverines. Harbaugh handled the first half with Hart assuming the lead role in the second half.
According to Angelique Chengelis with The Detroit News, Hart is the first African-American head coach in the history of the football program. While Hart might be the first, he will not be the only one for long with offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore assuming head coaching duties in Week 3.
Hart is a true program legend and still holds Michigan’s all-time rushing mark with 5,040 rushing yards. His 41 rushing touchdowns are 3rd all-time behind Anthony Thomas and Denard Robinson.
While Jay Harbaugh and Hart will share the win (provided the Wolverines hold onto their 28-0 second-half lead), this is a nice honor for Hart. He joined Jim Harbaugh’s staff to coach running backs in 2021 and added the role of run game coordinator in 2022.
Defensive coordinator Jesse Minter led the way to a win in Week 1. So far, the interim coaching duties have been handled swimmingly for the program, and Moore will get a chance to finish out the time in Week 3.
