Notre Dame appeared to be off to a great start against Michigan before one incredibly dumb miscue gave the ball right back to Michigan.

After pinning the Wolverines deep in their own territory, the Fighting Irish forced a quick punt. It looked like the Notre Dame offense was about to get good field position. Then a partially blocked punt appeared set to give Notre Dame great field position.

Then, the mental miscue kicked one. As the tipped punt continued to roll downfield, one Irish player dove for it in an attempt to control the ball. Unfortunately for Notre Dame, he could not corral it, and his contact with the ball made it live.

Michigan quickly pounced on the miscue to retain possession:

The Wolverines would turn that miscue into an early field goal to take a 3-0 lead.
