Papa Kante, a 6-foot-10 4-star prospect and Michigan’s first 2023 recruit, has requested a release from his National Letter of Intent at Michigan.

Kante is considered a modern center who is versatile enough to play with his back to the basket, and has the ability to hit 3-pointers. He chose Michigan over the likes of Maryland, Rutgers, Memphis and Pittsburgh.

Kante is rated as the 108th-best prospect in the nation, the 14th-best center and the 4th-best center, according to 247Sports Composite.

Kante has a 7-foot-4 wingspan and is highly efficient as a rebounder and an active shot-blocker.

It’s been an active offseason for Michigan, which added North Carolina transfer Caleb Love, Seton Hall transfer Tray Jackson and Alabama transfer Nimari Burnett. However, big man Hunter Dickinson left for the transfer portal.

Kante’s decision leaves Michigan with one scholarship open on the 2023-24 roster. Michigan now has one signee in the 2023 class in shooting guard George Washington III.
