Pete Thamel shares insight into potential Sherrone Moore suspension
ESPN’s Pete Thamel was on ‘Get Up’ on Monday morning to talk about the latest update in the NCAA’s investigation into Michigan’s alleged sign-stealing scheme that rocked the sport last fall.
A day earlier, Thamel and ESPN colleague Dan Murphy reported some key details from a draft of the NCAA’s Notice of Allegations. Perhaps most importantly, their report stated that new Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore is facing a potential show-cause penalty or a suspension as a result of the investigation.
ESPN’s report, citing the NOA draft, says Moore deleted 52 text messages with former Michigan assistant Connor Stalions, who is at the center of the NCAA’s investigation.
Moore was one of several Michigan coaches who were named in the draft, but he’s the only one who remains with the program entering the 2024 season. While talking with Mike Greenberg on ‘Get Up,’ Thamel said he expects Moore will face a “short suspension” from the NCAA.
“I would think Sherrone Moore faces a short suspension if you look at the history of this stuff, at the maximum,” Thamel said. “To go through sort of the matrix of what could happen to Michigan in this, I don’t think they’re going to have any type of postseason ban.”
Thamel also said he doesn’t believe Michigan will be forced to vacate any prior accomplishments.
“I don’t think, looking at the history and looking at past precedent in this, there’s going to be any retroactive anything to what they’ve already won and accomplished. Their accomplishments are safe,” Thamel said. “There’s no player eligibility at stake in this, so for Moore – who’s sort of become the face of this notice because the other coaches involved have all gone to the NFL – I would think we will find out in the upcoming weeks and months, depending on how long this takes to litigate, if he does end up getting some type of suspension.”
Moore was previously suspended for 1 game by the NCAA for recruiting violations he allegedly committed during COVID-19 dead periods. Because of his prior history, Moore is expected to be treated as a “repeat violator” by the NCAA in this case.
Michigan will open its season against Fresno State on Aug. 31.
