Michigan’s highest-rated recruit from the class of 2021 is on campus and getting settled in with the program.

That would be J.J. McCarthy, a five-star quarterback and the No. 22 overall player in the country for the cycle. According to the 247 Sports Composite, McCarthy is also the No. 2 pro-style quarterback prospect in the nation for 2021.

On Saturday evening, McCarthy shared a couple of photos from his getting settled in the locker room at Michigan. Among the things McCarthy shared are pictures of his new locker and a first look at his jersey with the Wolverines.

According to McCarthy’s image, he is starting off with the No. 9:

Considering some of Michigan’s offensive struggles in 2020, McCarthy will likely be competing for the starting job as a true freshman. Both Cade McNamara and Joe Milton saw time this past season.

Milton saw more time, completing just 56.7% of his passes for 1,077 yards and four touchdowns while also throwing four interceptions. McNamara completed 60.6% of passes for 425  yards and five touchdowns without an interception. The big difference is Milton averaged 1.6 more yards per attempt.

As with all recruits and young players, it would be wise for fans to temper whatever expectations they have for McCarthy. Still, it is not unreasonable to think he will find a way onto the field as a freshman.
