Rece Davis reveals question he regrets omitting during Jim Harbaugh interview
Rece Davis had a chance to speak with Jim Harbaugh shortly after Michigan’s national title win. The question admittedly on Davis’ mind and the minds of others was Harbaugh’s future plans, but the head coach did not yield any insight at the time.
On the latest episode of ESPN’s “College GameDay Podcast,” Davis admitted his gut instinct is that Harbaugh will leave for the right opportunity. However, Harbaugh’s demeanor for the interview did not indicate a coach who was dead set on leaving per Davis.
“Most of this is gut instinct: I think he’s leaving if he gets the right situation. But it wasn’t like he walked in there going I’ve done my job and now I can’t wait to get back to the NFL,” Davis explained. “He was pretty much quintessential Harbaugh in the way he answered it.”
Davis went on to explain the creative ways he tried to get Harbaugh to the NFL question without directly asking the question:
“I tried to get to some creative ways to answer because if you asked the ‘Are you going to the NFL’ the next morning; well, we know and you would have tipped me off if there was an imminent deal that had been done. You know if you ask that, it might make you feel like a tough guy, but you’re not (going to get) anything,” Davis admitted.
Overall, the interview was textbook Harbaugh, but Davis knows he left one question on the table that would have been interesting for the coach to answer. It’s ultimately a regret for Davis, but there’s no telling if Harbaugh would have provided any more insight.
“There’s always a quersiton that you left on the table — and this was just a miss by me — the follow-up question that I missed and I regret: What would it take to get you to leave Michgian? That’s a pretty basic question that I missed,” said Davis.
