Rece Davis spoke about Michigan’s outlook on the latest episode of the College GameDay Podcast.

It’s been a tough few days for the Wolverines as they pick up the pieces from their 31-12 loss to Texas in Week 1. Davis said on the podcast that he doesn’t expect Michigan to contender for a College Football Playoff berth this season.

He also reiterated his prediction that Michigan will finish the season with an 8-4 record:

“Michigan’s problems seem deep enough that it wasn’t that loss itself that would be playoff disqualifying,” Davis said. “But a signal of things that it appears that they’ll have a difficult time fixing to win enough games to be in Playoff consideration.

“I think, Pete, you and I on the podcast both said they feel like an 8-4 type team this year. That’s kind of what I see from them right now. They look like an 8-4 team, probably not in contention for the Playoff unless they have an absolute turnaround in the coming weeks.”

Michigan will still likely be favored in most of its remaining games, but that may not be the case in matchups against USC, Oregon and Ohio State. Michigan will likely need to win at least 1 of those contests in order to get back to the College Football Playoff this year.

The betting markets are actually lower on Michigan entering Week 3 than Davis is. FanDuel has Michigan’s live regular-season win total set at 7.5 games. FanDuel also has Michigan priced at +550 to make the College Football Playoff in 2024.

Michigan will host Arkansas State in Week 3.
