Brady Hoke may soon be a college football head coach again.

Wednesday, Bruce Feldman of The Athletic reported that current San Diego State head coach Rocky Long is expected to step down from his position. The expectation is for Hoke, who is the defensive line coach for the Aztecs, to step in and take over as the head coach.

This would be Hoke’s first head coaching gig since being fired from Michigan following the 2014 season. Before taking over in Ann Arbor, Hoke coached San Diego State from 2009-2010, turning a 4-8 team into a nine-win squad in one year.

Hoke has bounced around quite a bit since being terminated at Michigan. In 2016, he was the defensive coordinator at Oregon and then jumped to Tennessee for the 2017 season, where he was the defensive line coach and associate head coach.

Following Butch Jones’ firing from Tennessee midway through the 2017 season, Hoke served as the interim head coach for the Volunteers. He then spent time with the Carolina Panthers in the NFL as the defensive line coach before returning to San Diego State this past year.

Before his first stop at San Diego State, Hoke spent six seasons as the head coach at Ball State, his alma mater. While in Muncie, Hoke guided the Cardinals to a 34-38 record, which included a 12-1 year in 2008.

In 12 years as a head coach, Hoke has compiled a 78-70 record (not counting his time as the interim head coach at Tennessee). He was 31-20 in four seasons at Michigan.
