Report: Former Michigan passing game coordinator, assistant coach joining Chargers staff
Former Michigan assistant head coach and passing game coordinator Pep Hamilton was one of many affected due to the XFL’s closure because of the COVID-19 pandemic. But the longtime football mind has landed on his feet.
Daniel Popper of The Athletic is reporting that Hamilton is expected to become the next quarterbacks coach for the Los Angeles Chargers. He rejoins the NFL after spending the last few years as the head coach and general manager of the XFL’s DC Defenders. Though the league started in 2020, Hamilton received the opportunity following the 2018 college football season.
Before taking over as a head coach in the XFL, Hamilton spent two seasons under Jim Harbaugh at Michigan. He was the assistant head coach and passing game coordinator for the Wolverines in 2017 and 2018.
Hamilton has been on the coaching circuit for over 20 years now and has spent a good chunk of his career in the NFL. He’s spent 11 seasons in the league and has had stops with the New York Jets (2003-05), San Francisco 49ers (2006), Chicago Bears (2007-09), Indianapolis Colts (2013-15) and Cleveland Browns (2016).
The XFL was able to hold five games before being forced to shut down due to coronavirus. Hamilton’s Defenders were 3-2 through the first half of the year.
