Juwan Howard’s pursuit of an elite coaching staff took a big step this week.
On Monday, Brendan Quinn of The Athletic reported that longtime St. Joseph’s head coach Phil Martelli has been offered and has accepted a role on the Michigan coaching staff as an assistant. It was reported that the former head coach was offered the position last week.
Howard was officially introduced has the Michigan head coach last week and has apparently wasted no time in assembling his staff.

Martelli was a longtime head coach at St. Joseph’s, serving in the post from 1995 through 2019. He was let go at the end of the 2019 season after a 14-19 year, the program’s second losing season in three years.
In 24 seasons as the head coach at St. Joseph’s, Martelli compiled a 425-303 record and guided his teams to 13 postseason appearances (7 NCAA Tournament, 6 NIT). His most memorable year came in the 2003-04 campaign, when the Hawks finished the year 30-2 and earned a trip to the Elite Eight.
Prior to taking over as the head coach at St. Joseph’s, Martelli was an assistant coach for the Hawks from 1985-1995.
