Just days before Michigan is set to take the field for the first time during the 2020 season, a redshirt freshman linebacker has decided to enter his name into the NCAA transfer portal.

Monday, 247Sports reported that linebacker Charles Thomas has decided to explore opportunities outside of Ann Arbor. The news comes as the Wolverines prepare to take on Minnesota in a Week 1 showdown scheduled for Saturday night.

Thomas is a former 3-star recruit who appeared in two games for Michigan during his true freshman campaign in Ann Arbor. Both times, Thomas played on special teams.

With his decision, Thomas becomes the second young linebacker to enter his name in the NCAA transfer portal this fall. Freshman Osman Savage also decided to explore opportunities outside of Michigan to continue his college football career.

Michigan is coming off a 9-4 season in 2019 and will begin the 2020 campaign against the Golden Gophers. Saturday’s game in Minneapolis will bring ESPN’s College GameDay to town.
