Sherrone Moore has announced the suspension of a recent Michigan hire.

U-M defensive line coach Greg Scruggs, who was introduced as a Wolverines assistant on March 6, was arrested early Saturday morning in Ann Arbor for operating a vehicle while intoxicated, per Angelique S. Chengelis of The Detroit News. A police spokesperson told the paper that the arrest occurred just before 3 a.m.

Moore released a statement announcing that Scruggs has been suspended indefinitely by the Michigan athletic department.

“Greg made an unfortunate mistake and was arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated,” Moore’s statement reads. “He made no excuses and has taken accountability for his actions. The football program and athletic department have suspended Greg indefinitely while we review details of the incident.”

A former Louisville standout from Cincinnati, Scruggs played in the NFL from 2012-to-2016. He got into coaching in 2018.

Scruggs, 33, went home to Cincinnati to get his coaching start. He was a Bearcats support staffer for two seasons (2018-19) before becoming the program’s defensive line coach.

Scruggs spent the 2022 season on the staff of the New York Jets as assistant defensive line coach. He returned to the college ranks in 2023, reuniting with Luke Fickell to take the Wisconsin defensive line coach position.

Michigan begins spring practice on Monday. Moore’s statement did not address how defensive line coaching will be handled during Scruggs’ suspension.

The defending national champion will hold their spring game on April 20 at noon.
