Just 5 days before Michigan begins its defense of its national championship with a home primetime game against Fresno State, the Wolverines still don’t know who their starting quarterback is going to be.

At least, 1st-year head coach Sherrone Moore isn’t saying who it is quite yet. He addressed it Monday in his weekly press conference.

Moore did reveal that 1st-team snaps during preseason practice have been an “even distribution” between Alex Orji and Davis Warren. Jack Tuttle was the 3rd player involved in the quarterback competition at the start of fall camp.

“We’ll see,” Moore said on Monday. “We’re close.”

Moore is still looking for that guy to emerge after the Wolverines waved goodbye to star quarterback JJ McCarthy, who led the program to its 1st national title since 1997 before heading off to the NFL. McCarthy was selected 10th overall by the Minnesota Vikings in the 2024 draft and had a strong preseason before suffering a season-ending injury a few weeks ago.

“I mean, they’ve all been really good,” Moore said earlier in camp. “They’ve had their days that one guy’s been good, one guy’s been really good, one guy’s been better. So not a frontrunner. Really kind of all even playing right now, and we’ll see how we go into this week, next week, and then game week.”

Michigan and Fresno State kick off their 2024 seasons on Saturday on NBC when we’ll see for sure who leads the Wolverines. The game is slated for kickoff at 7:30 ET.
