The rumors are flying and speculation is beginning. With the news that John Beilein is leaving Michigan to coach the Cleveland Cavaliers, everyone is weighing in on who should be the next head coach in Ann Arbor.
Mike DeCourcy of The Sporting News and frequent basketball analyst for Big Ten Network comprised a list of potential candidates who could replace Beilein at Michigan. There are some interesting names on that list, including a current B1G coach and an NBA coach.
DeCourcy’s list included nine names. Here are some of the candidates he thought might be the best fit for the Wolverines:
- Billy Donovan — Oklahoma City Thunder
- Bob McKillop — Davidson
- Ed Cooley — Providence
- Steve Pikiell — Rutgers
- Luke Yaklich — Michigan (assistant)
Donovan has been one of the more popular names thrown around regarding the Michigan job. Donovan, who coached at Florida before jumping to the NBA, led the Gators to two national championships in 2006 and 2007.
Not on DeCourcy’s list is former Michigan and NBA star Juwan Howard. That was a name mentioned by ESPN’s Jay Williams as a potential candidate, as well.
