Cam Newton is often considered one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play college football. So for Urban Meyer to compare Michigan QB Joe Milton to the former Auburn star, it speaks pretty highly of the talent the Wolverines presumed starter possesses.

Milton, a redshirt sophomore at Michigan, has appeared in just eight games for the Wolverines during his first two seasons with the program. But with Dylan McCaffrey opting out and reportedly transferring, it appears that he’ll be Michigan’s QB1 for the 2020 season.

According to Meyer, Milton’s stature and skill set reminds him of Newton.

“I would always just kind of walk over and start looking at their personnel, and I was like, ‘Who is that cat?” Meyer said on FOX’s Big Noon Kickoff. “That is a Cam Newton lookalike, and he’s got a hose and he can run.”

Milton has thrown 11 passes over the last two years at Michigan, completing 6 for 117 yards and a touchdown. He’s also rushed for 47 yards and two touchdowns.

The Wolverines hope Milton brings a Newton-like presence to the field. The offense is being forced to replace quite a bit, including four offensive linemen who were selected in the 2020 NFL Draft, quality receivers in Donovan Peoples-Jones and Nico Collins and, of course, quarterback Shea Patterson.

Not many have major expectations for Michigan this season, but if Milton is able to carry a heavy offensive load this fall, the Wolverines may be in a good situation in 2020.
