Warde Manuel had to find a new head coach after Jim Harbaugh returned Michigan to the pinnacle of college football. However, the AD of the Wolverines still wants the opportunity to celebrate and honor the outgoing head coach.

This week, it was confirmed that Harbaugh is riding the momentum of the national championship to a return to the NFL. He is the new head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers, returning to California and a franchise he once played for.

On Friday, the program announced offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore was being elevated to the permanent head coaching role and introduced Moore during a Saturday press conference. Manuel used that event as an opportunity to thank Harbaugh for his service and wish him well in the NFL.

“I want to thank Jim for his 9 years of service and contributions to Michigan football and our greatness. He will always be remembered by us,” said Manuel. “We will miss him and Sara and the family but I want him to know we will be cheering for him and wishing him great success with the Chargers.”

As for the special honor, Manuel said he and Moore both agreed they want Harbaugh to serve as a captain for The Game during the 2024 season. It remains to be seen if Harbaugh’s NFL schedule will accommodate that, but it would certainly be a memorable day, especially with The Game being played in Columbus during the 2024 season.

“If the timing is right, Sherrone and I would like to have him come back and serve as a captain for The Game this year and as he says ‘take a long and slow bow’ in front of all the fans. So thanks to Jim,” Manuel explained.
