Warde Manuel says Dusty May extension is not related to Indiana vacancy
Warde Manuel met with reporters on Friday night to discuss a new contract extension for Michigan men’s basketball coach Dusty May.
Manuel and May have agreed to a 5-year extension less than 1 year since he took the job. The news comes as reports indicated May was being pursued by Indiana, as the Hoosiers will be replacing Mike Woodson this offseason. May is an IU alum and an Indiana native.
However, Manuel said extension talks with May pre-dated the IU vacancy and had “nothing” to do with the decision to extend May at this time.
“What made me mad is we started to talk about this [extension] before they went to Indiana and all that started,” Manuel said. “I want to assure you all this has nothing to do with the reaction to that … This is what we wanted to do. It’s a great day, but I just want to assure people this has nothing to do with [Indiana].”
May is certainly off to a good start with the Wolverines despite the loss to rival Michigan State on Friday night. Michigan is 20-6 on the season and is just a half game back of Michigan State for first place in the Big Ten regular-season standings.
Even if the extension talks weren’t related to the Indiana vacancy, this contract should give Michigan fans some peace-of-mind as the Hoosiers conduct their search. May told CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander on Saturday night that he’s “staying at Michigan” after finalizing this deal.
Michigan will be in action again on Monday night as it faces Nebraska.
