Michigan is off to an 11-0 start and is ranked as the No. 5 team in the country. None of that matters to John Beilein right now.

On Saturday afternoon, the Wolverines added another win to their record, knocking off in-state foe Western Michigan 70-62 in Ann Arbor. It wasn’t the best performance of the year from the maize and blue, but they got the job done.

After the game, Beilein talked about his team’s performance, and it was easy to see he wasn’t too happy. Despite the tremendous start to the year, he believes his team still has a lot of room for improvement.

“We couldn’t do anything right,” Beilein said after the game. “We started out 1-for-8 from the foul line, we were missing layups, it just was one of those days that it didn’t look like was gonna be our day. We made just a good enough run at the end of the first half, start of the second half to win the game. Somehow.

“Everybody is talking about how good we are — no. We gotta long way to go.”

Michigan’s 11-0 start has included victories over Villanova, North Carolina, Purdue and Northwestern, all nice resumé builders for this stage in the season. Clearly, Beilein wants to see his team play a crisper brand of basketball.

The Wolverines are off for a full week before returning to the hardwood on Saturday, Dec. 22 against Air Force.
