There was a chance that Michigan was going to lose running backs coach Tyrone Wheatley to Western Michigan.

The Wolverines assistant was a candidate to take P.J. Fleck’s job. That didn’t happen, but Michigan still lost Wheatley.

The Jacksonville Jaguars announced that Wheatley will be their new running backs coach:

“I am excited to have Tyrone join our staff and work with our running backs,” new Jaguars coach Doug Marrone said in a release. “I have worked with him for five years and know the type of leader and teacher that he is. He is an exceptional coach and will bring out the best in his players.

“He brings a charisma, attitude and Super Bowl playing experience to the staff that will be vital as we enter the 2017 season.”

Wheatley coached at his alma mater on Jim Harbaugh’s staff for two years. His son, Tyrone Wheatley Jr., is a tight end.

Wheatley was the second Michigan assistant coach to leave for a promotion. Passing coordinator Jedd Fisch, who was previously with the Jaguars, left the Wolverines for UCLA.

It remains to be seen how Wheatley’s departure will impact Michigan two weeks before National Signing Day.
